EPC/GDV SUPPORT
The procedure to follow when you have failures of GDV equipment or software
If all steps have been made to prepare the device for work (see user manual) but you fail to obtain normal GDV-images in the Capture program, you need to make sure that the software has been installed correctly and all settings have been observed.
If you fail to do rectification of faults you need to make sure that the hardware is working.

Checking the hardware
"GDV Camera"
1. Disconnect the instrument from the computer.
2. Make sure that the power of your instrument is on.
3. Make sure that the figures on the indicator glass are on: there should be "0.5" for exposure and "1" for range.
4. Press the "Start" button without placing anything on the electrode. A red lamp should be flashing on the instrument and going out. A weak sound of discharge should be heard. Switch off the light in the room and make sure that there is no visible glow on the edges of the electrode when you start the instrument.
5. Place the test object onto the electrode and connect it to the earth. Press "Start". Make sure that you can hear clearly the sound of discharge and see visible glow around the test object. The sound should be a short clear peep, there should not be any crunchy or fading away sounds.
6. Pressing the buttons "Exposure" and "Range" make sure that there is switching over from one range to another on the indicator.
"GDV Compact"
1. Disconnect the instrument from the computer.
2. Make sure that the power of your instrument is on.
3. If you Compact is battery-powered, make sure that the battery is charged.
4. Make sure that the green lamp on the instrument is on.
5. Switch off the instrument and switch it on again keeping the "Stop" button pressed. The control start of the instrument should follow. The button "Stop" should flash in red for a short time and then go out. A weak sound of discharge should be heard. Switch off the light in the room and make sure that there is no visible glow on the edges of the electrode when you start the instrument.
6. Repeat the control start with the test object placed on the electrode. Make sure that you can hear clearly the sound of discharge and see visible glow around the test object. The sound should be a short clear peep, there should not be any crunchy or fading away sounds.
Troubleshooting failures due to setting and/or adjusting drivers
This description refers to the GDV Capture program designed for capturing GDV-images and working with the GDV Camera.
Failure
Solution
There is no image in the preview window of videocam when you have taken off the light-protecting cover (the preview mode is on, i.e. the button is pushed).
The Philips (or ZipShot) videocam driver is not installed or is installed incorrectly. See section below How to check the correctness of driver installation necessary to work with the instrument.
You can see an image in the preview window but you can not capture the image when you push the left mouse button on an empty GDV- image box.
The built-in microcontroller driver is not installed or is installed incorrectly. See section below How to check the correctness of driver installation necessary to work with the instrument.
You can see an image in the preview window; when you push the left mouse button on an empty GDV-image box you can successfully capture the GDV-image, but the discharge does not start (normally you will hear a short and clear peep, a red lamp-indicator on the instrument body will be on for a short time and then will go out).
The built-in microcontroller driver is not installed or is installed incorrectly. See section below How to check the correctness of driver installation necessary to work with the instrument.
You can see an image in the preview window and start the discharge successfully; you can capture a GDV-image but you can not see the glow in the recorded GDV-image, or the glow is very weak; or it is too bright. Incorrect settings of Philips videocam. Make sure again that the settings correspond to those indicated in the Operating Manual.
Malfunction is possible. See section How to check the hardware.
When you launch the GDV Capture program you see the message will appear "GDV Camera is connecting…" and when the message disappears you are not able to start the instrument using the mouse.
The type of GDV-device is indicated incorrectly in the GDV Capture settings. Launch the program, wait until the message disappears, select the menu item “Settings -> Type of GDV-device” and make sure that the type of device indicated in the box corresponds to the one recommended in the Operating Manual. You have most likely indicated the type of device as “GDV Compact controlled via COM-port” however you need to indicate either “GDV Camera with USB control”, or “GDV Camera without autostart”.
During installation of an older version of the GDV Technique software package (If bought before July 2005) the message appears "Fatal error of software settings. If this message appears again, contact KTI".
Update the driver version of the electronic HASP key:
- Download the archive hasp4_driver_setup.zip.
- Unpack it and run the automatic installer of the new driver version.
- After finishing the driver installation re-install the GDV Technique software package.
If you carried out the above instructions but did not succeed, you need to make sure that the hardware is working.
Troubleshooting failures of hardware
Failure
Solution
The GDV Capture program "freezes" continuously or periodically after you have captured various objects.
The image in the preview window disappears.
There is no normal discharge after the start.
Try to connect the device to other USB ports on your computer.
It is not recommended to connect the device to the USB ports on the front panel of desk computer.
The device should be as farther as possible from the computer, the USB cable should have no coils and be straightened and not intertwined with other cables (especially if it is the power cord).
Try to connect your device via an external USB-hub with independent power supply (you can find it in any computer shop).
Try to replace the USB cable with another one with similar connections.
When connecting the device to your laptop you fail to install the required drivers, the device is missing in the list of USB devices.
Try to connect your GDV device to other USB ports on your computer.
Try to connect the device via the external USB hub with autonomous power supply (can be purchased in any computer shop).
Try to replace the USB cable by another one with similar connections.
Try to connect the device to any available desktop computer and check its workability.
No switching of the video cam to the GDV+. Close the GDV Capture program. Switch off the power and disconnect the GDV+ from the device. Switch on the power again. Start the GDV Capture program and then connect the GDV+ again.
Capturing is not stable.
When you carry out serial capturing of the test object dramatic changes of the main characteristics of images are observed.
When capturing in dynamics dramatic changes of the characteristics of the tested subject are observed.
Before you start working with the device switch it on, run the GDV Capture program and switch the preview mode. Warm up the device in these conditions for 20 minutes.
You are not able to do calibration normally:
- uneven glow of the test object is observed,
- the inner area coloring is different from the background.
Clean the test object.
Clean the glass of the electrode.
Stretch the ground wire so that it will not deflect the test object from vertical position.
Make sure that the test object is reliably connected to the ground input of the device.
Depending on the computer configuration and USB port type (USB 1.1 or USB 2.0) failures may occur in GDV equipment performance if there are several devices simultaneously connected to the computer.
In such case disconnect all other devices (USB mouse, video cams, scanners, etc.) when you carry out capturing.
Checking drivers installation and setting
1. Open the Control panel window in в Windows 2000/XP. Start the icon “System”. Select the tab "Hardware" and click on the "Device manager".
(In Windows 98 it is sufficient to select the tab "Device manager".)
2. Disconnect the GDV Camera from the computer, wait for 5 seconds and connect it again.
3. Do you see in the list of hardware the yellow lines on the left? Or, just a single unknown device? If there are such, do they disappear when you disconnect the device from the computer?
3.1. If such device has the line "GDV Camera" in its name, press the right mouse button on the line with the name of the device, select “Update/reinstall driver”. Select the item “Specified location”.
Insert the CD with the GDV Software and indicate the path to the driver ":\Drivers\GDVDrivers". Answer yes to all questions of the OS. After that the marker on the right should disappear and the GDV Camera will work.
3.2. If such device has the line "Philips ToUCam" in its name, press the right mouse button on the line with the name of the device and select “Update (reinstall) driver” in the menu. Select the item “Specified location”.
Insert the CD with the GDV Software and indicate the path to the driver ":\Drivers\Philips". Answer yes to all questions of the OS. After that the marker on the left should disappear and the GDV Camera will work
There may be three such devices in different sections of the "Device manager". Repeat the same operation for all of them.
4. Without closing the window of the "Device manager" connect the electronic key. Make sure that there is the line "Alladin USB key" or "Alladin HASP key" in the section “USB controllers”.
If there is no such line or if there is one with a yellow marker on the left, install the driver manually.
4.1. Download the archive hasphl_driver_setup.zip for the GDV Software 2005 package and higher.
(For the GDV Software package bought before June 2005 года, download the archive hasp4_driver_setup.zip).
4.2. Unpack the archive and run the file HASPUserSetup.exe for the GDV Software package 2005 and higher.
